A contention.

So here’s a contentious point.

Have a listen to the following highly compelling song which came out in 1993.  It’s ok – you won’t like it:

Death – The Philosopher

And compare it with this altogether more “palatable” (but similarly compelling) song which came out roughly the same time:

Nirvana – Territorial Pissing

What’s the point of this lamentable exercise?

It’s the same song.  It’s the same band.

You don’t like death metal?  You don’t like grunge?  It’s all pop music.  It’s the same structure, the same delivery.

But more than this: try listening to Death.  Just this band – I’m not asking you to listen to Cannibal Corpse, Necrophagist, Cradle of Filth, Celine Dion, any ska or punk music, or anything else similarly irredeemable (artistically) – if you listen to what Chuck Schuldiner was doing across the albums “Human”, “Individual Thought Patterns”, “Symbolic” – you’ll find a guy who was doing something as powerful, original, brilliant, and with as much artistic merit as anything by Cobain.

You don’t like death metal?  Fine – but you’re missing out on some art.  I can’t stand female solo artists – Celine, Lady Gaga, etc – but I love Bjork.  Art!  Open your ears bro!
